Coastal Outdoor Spaces by the Sea

Designing for salt air, corrosive mist, and the particular quality of light that bounces off the Ligurian Gulf — where every material choice is tested against the marine environment.

The Marine Climate Challenge

Properties within five hundred metres of the Sanremo waterfront face accelerated corrosion on standard steel fixings, faster fading on untreated timber, and salt deposits that stain porous stone within a single season. Coastal outdoor design demands a different specification sheet than inland garden work.

We select marine-grade stainless steel, powder-coated aluminium with AAMA 2604 finish, and sealants rated for continuous UV and salt exposure. These choices add roughly fifteen percent to material budgets but reduce maintenance cycles from annual to every four or five years.

Pool Terraces & Sun Decks

Infinity-edge pool surrounds and adjacent sun decks require non-slip surfaces with comfortable barefoot temperatures. Light-coloured limestone reflects heat, while darker slate is reserved for shaded zones. We coordinate coping profiles, skimmer covers, and deck expansion joints with pool engineers before any terrace paving is ordered.

Pool terrace design packages begin at €5,400 for decks up to 45 square metres, including furniture layout and planting buffers for privacy from neighbouring sightlines.

Seaside Dining & Lounging Zones

Outdoor rooms near the coast need windbreaks that do not block the view you paid for. Glass balustrade sections, perforated metal screens, and strategic planting create shelter without boxing in the horizon. Dining tables are positioned to avoid afternoon glare while catching evening breeze off the water.

Weatherproof lounge furniture specifications and custom stucco-clad storage benches are detailed in our coastal living addendum, typically €1,650 as a supplement to an existing masterplan.

Lighting for Coastal Evenings

Harbour reflections and moonlight on the water mean coastal terraces need layered lighting rather than a single overhead source. Low-level path lights, concealed LED strips under bench seating, and adjustable wall washers on stucco parapets create ambience without light pollution toward the sea.

All specified fixtures carry IP65 rating minimum. A complete coastal lighting design with circuit schedule costs from €890.

Planting for Salt Exposure

Not every Mediterranean favourite survives direct salt spray. We favour coastal rosemary, statice, euphorbia, and carpobrotus ground cover alongside olives and pittosporum hedging set back from the leading edge. Planters on exposed corners receive wind-buffer planting in front to extend specimen lifespans.

Coastal planting schedules with irrigation notes are prepared at €720 for terraces up to 80 square metres, or included in full masterplan engagements.
